{"id":1228,"date":"2021-01-11T14:16:36","date_gmt":"2021-01-11T20:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2021-01-11T14:16:36","modified_gmt":"2021-01-11T20:16:36","slug":"the-elements-of-a-coup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/?p=1228","title":{"rendered":"The Elements of a Coup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/political-correctness-voltaire.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-168\" src=\"http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/political-correctness-voltaire.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/political-correctness-voltaire.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.conservativelefty.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/political-correctness-voltaire-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve heard a lot of comments on &#8220;coups&#8221; recently from all sides.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;m running from memory that is rather old, but if I remember, this is what pretty much defines authoritarian coups.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take advantage of, or create, a crisis\/emergency.<\/li>\n<li>Use the crisis to build a state of unrest.<\/li>\n<li>Using that state of unrest, subvert or undermine the political process to take power.\u00a0 This need not be through violence, though it often is.<\/li>\n<li>Create at least a veneer of legality to justify the actions.<\/li>\n<li>Criminalize the prior governing body.<\/li>\n<li>Take control of the means of public information.<\/li>\n<li>Criminalize the expression of dissent and opposing opinion.<\/li>\n<li>Suspend civil liberties for the duration of the crisis.<\/li>\n<li>Establish authoritarian rule as a necessity to manage the crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are bullet points rather than numerical sequences because they don&#8217;t necessarily have to occur in order.\u00a0 However, I&#8217;m thinking back through history and I can&#8217;t think of any case outside of one outlier back through Roman times where these aren&#8217;t the elements of a coup.<\/p>\n<p>The one outlier is Cromwell in the early\/mid 17th century.\u00a0 Of course, that part of history is a rather bizarre bit of history.\u00a0 Something only the British could have. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I would suggest looking at what group(s) are following this model.\u00a0 Hint:\u00a0 it&#8217;s not Donald Trump, libertarians (lower case &#8220;ell&#8221;), or classical liberals.\u00a0 I&#8217;m watching actively for those later points to start showing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve heard a lot of comments on &#8220;coups&#8221; recently from all sides.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;m running from memory that is rather old, but if I remember, this is what pretty much defines authoritarian coups.
